The brief

Wea Township Fire Department serves every family, farm and business in its township from one station near Lafayette, Indiana. It needed a public website residents could actually use, and the career and volunteer crew needed one place to run the department day to day.

The public site

  • “What brings you here?” Residents, schools and businesses, and people who want to join each get a short list of the things they come for: smoke alarm requests, car seat checks, station tours, incident reports and job applications.
  • Live activity. Recent calls and year-to-date totals come straight from county dispatch, with a heatmap of where the department ran this year. Addresses are only shown to the block.
  • Press room. Press releases with photos, bylines, author pages, an RSS feed and share images built automatically for each release.
  • Email alerts. Residents pick the topics they want (press releases, community notices, events, classes), and every email has a link to change them.
  • Events and classes. A public calendar and a page for each class.

Behind the scenes

  • Members’ app. An iPhone app and installable web app with call alerts, the shift calendar, volunteer hours and staffing. It also holds the county’s EMS protocols, which keep working with no signal.
  • Station TVs. Screens in the station show active calls with a street view and route map. Between calls they rotate slides with apparatus status, weather and announcements, and an AI slide editor helps write them.
  • Media library. Every photo and video in one place, with AI descriptions so the right shot can be found for a release or a slide.
  • Press office tools. Press releases, media contacts, inquiries, and a monthly report that pulls its numbers from the site.
  • Hiring. Online applications with secure file uploads and a review board.

Station TVs

Screens in the apparatus bay and day room. Between calls they show the crew, the day and the week; when a call drops, the whole screen turns into the call.

On a call. Street view and the route side by side, who's responding and how far out, and every unit's status.
The command board. Clock, weather, who's on duty, today's schedule and the latest runs.
The week at a glance, with today highlighted.

Slides between calls

Officers build slides in the console, by hand or with AI, and schedule them into the rotation. Live blocks pull the crew, calendar and weather straight from the department's data.

A station home slide built from live blocks.
The week ahead, filled in from the department calendar.
A one-off event slide with a QR code to RSVP.
The AI slide builder offers three layouts to pick from, then refine on the canvas.

Members' console

The same system runs the crew's day-to-day work, on a phone or at a desk.

The county's EMS protocols, searchable by category, with step-by-step treatment cards.
